Alfred Ashwell

Alfred Ashwell was born in Bishop's Stortford on 5 May 1894, the son of Jeffery Ashwell, a farmer, and his wife Julia Elizabeth. In May 1911, three days after his 17th birthday, Ashwell went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In January 1915 Ashwell left his job at the bank's Leamington Spa branch to join the army, serving initially as a Lance Corporal in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. In November 1916 he was commissioned. Second Lieutenant Alfred Ashwell died in France on 4 April 1917. He was 22 years old.

 

Alfred Ashwell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at  NatWest Royal Leamington Spa branch.
