Andrew Balfour Aitken was born on 5 February 1899. In September 1914, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Elie branch.

 

During the First World War Aitken joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died on 3 October 1918 of wounds received in action on the Somme. He was 19 years old.  

 

Andrew Balfour Aitken is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh

Researching Charles Aitken and realised that this family gave two sons to the war; Andrew and Charles(Aust. Army) Both killed within two days of each other(3rd and 5th October 1918) what a lost for a family. What two courageous boys. Rest in peace.
