Charles Milton Apperley was born in Oswaldtwistle on 22 April 1888, the son of the Reverend Edward Hodges Apperley and his wife Mary.

 

In January 1904, when Apperley was 15 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Darwen branch. He was promoted to clerk in January 1908, and two months later transferred to Blackburn branch.

 

In August 1916 Apperley joined the army, and by 1918 was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps. He died of wounds on 28 March 1918, while a prisoner of war in German hands. He was 29 years old.
