Edward Leslie Arnold was born on 16 September 1894, the son of Tom and Annie Arnold. In January 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as an apprentice. Four years later he was promoted to a clerkship.

Arnold joined the army in October 1915. He died on the Western Front on 13 November 1916, while serving as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Fusiliers. He was 22 years old.
