Frederick John Allen was born on 17 May 1893, the son of Frederick Herbert Allen and his wife Alice. He was educated at Westminster City School, where he was a member of the school army cadet corps. In October 1910, when he was 17 years old, Allen went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

Outside work, Allen was a territorial soldier, a member of the 28th (Artists' Rifles) Battalion of the London Regiment. He was an excellent shot, and was a member of two award-winning teams in shooting competitions against other Artists' companies and battalions.

 

Early in the First World War Allen left his job as a clerk at London County & Westminster Bank's London Victoria Street branch to go on military service, and was commissioned into the Devonshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Frederick John Allen died on 27 September 1915 from wounds sustained during the Battle of Loos. He was 22 years old.
