Harry John Atkinson was born in Dulwich on 9 July 1894, the son of George Atkinson, a tea dealer, and his wife Agnes Isabella. He was educated at Alleyn's School in London, where he was a prefect and house captain.

 

In August 1912, when Atkinson was 18, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club. Two years later, in August 1914, Atkinson left his job as a clerk at the bank's Croydon branch to serve in the army. By the time of his death in 1916 he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry).

 

Second Lieutenant Henry Atkinson was killed in action in France on 17 August 1916. He was 22 years old.

 

Harry Atkinson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Croydon High Street branch.
