Alan William Batchelor was born on 8 March 1899, the son of Alfred William and Emma Batchelor. Alfred was cashier in National Provincial Bank of England's West Hartlepool branch, and in 1915, when Alan was 16, he also went to work for the bank, as apprentice at its Sunderland branch.

 

Batchelor later joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in France on 21 August 1918. He was 19 years old.
