Arthur Fletcher Bentley was born in Derby on 10 December 1892, the son of Samuel Bentley, a commercial traveller, and his wife Amelia. In July 1910, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for Parr's Bank as a probationer at its Mansfield branch.

 

During the First World War Bentley left his job at the bank's Bakewell branch to go on military service. Second Lieutenant Arthur Fletcher Bentley of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) died in hospital in France on 11 March 1916, of wounds received in action on 4 March. He was 23 years old.
