Arthur Tregenza Besley was born in Crouch End on 28 August 1898, the son of Frank Besley, a textile agent, and his wife Edith. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank as a clerk in its London East Finchley branch.

 

During the First World War Besley served as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 10 October 1916, when he was 18 years old.

 

Arthur Besley is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
