Ernest Brown was born in 1879, the son of Henry and Mary Brown. From about 1909 he worked for Parr's Bank as a messenger.

 

During the First World War Brown left his job at the bank's London Streatham branch to join the army, serving as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action in France on 6 May 1918. He was 39 years old and left a widow, Beatrice, and three children under the age of 6.
