Francis Bush Blackman was born on 8 September 1890, the son of Bush and Beatrice Blackman. In May 1905, when he was 14 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Falkirk branch. He became a clerk there in June 1909. A year later he transferred to the bank's Kirkintilloch branch.

 

During the First World War Blackman joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 20 July 1918. He was 27 years old.
