George Herbert Barratt was born in Ashton-under-Lyne on 14 September 1894, the son of Herbert Barratt, a railway clerk, and his wife Annie. In August 1910, when he was 15 years old, he started work for Manchester & County Bank.

 

In September 1914 Barratt left his job as a clerk at the bank's Ashton-under-Lyne branch to go on active service as a Lieutenant in a territorial battalion of the Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 9 October 1917. He was 23 years old.
