Harold Billing was born in Leek in 1896, the son of Francis and Mary Billing. He started working for Parr's Bank in about 1912.

 

During the First World War Billing left his job at the bank's Leek branch to join the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 20 years old.
