Harry Beattie was born on 15 November 1896, the son of Robert Beattie and his wife Margaret. In February 1912, when he was 15 years old, he started working for Manchester & County Bank.

In October 1915 Beattie left his job at the bank's head office to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He died of dysentery at Amara, Mesopotamia on 11 December 1916. He was 20 years old.
