James Falconar Brodrick-English was born on 26 February 1892, the son of Arthur Brodrick-English, a solicitor, and his wife Mary.

 

In October 1910, when Brodrick-English was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Middlesbrough branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and remained at Middlesbrough as a clerk. The following year, his manager described him as having 'gentlemanly manners and appearance. Fairly quick and accurate. Intelligent and self-possessed'.

 

Brodrick-English joined the Seaforth Highlanders in September 1914. Lance Corporal Brodrick-English died in hospital in France on 21 April 1917. He was 25 years old.
