Sydney Freeman Brookfield was born in Cheshire in 1883, the son of Sydney Brookfield, a draper, and his wife Susan Thorne Brookfield. After leaving school he became a bank clerk, and in 1904 took a job at Drummonds Bank in London. He lived in boarding accommodation above the bank's offices at 49 Charing Cross.

 

During the First World War Brookfield joined the army. Captain Sydney Freeman Brookfield of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) died on the Somme on 3 September 1916.
