Thomas Fawcett Batterbury was born on 28 June 1881, the son of George Henry Batterbury, a doctor, and his wife Jessie. He was educated at Epsom College.

In 1898, when Batterbury was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice in its Landport branch. In 1902, after completing his apprenticeship, he became a clerk at Bournemouth Westbourne branch. Three years later, he was transferred to Burton upon Trent branch; then to Norwich in 1910; to Cambridge in October 1914; and to Deal the following month.

During the First World War Batterbury joined the army, serving as a Private in the Middlesex Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium on 10 October 1917. He was 36 years old.
