Thomas Vernon Boyes was born in Ashton-under-Lyne on 31 May 1897, the son of Thomas Norcliffe Boyes, a house furnisher, and his wife Emily Ada. He worked for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

 

During the First World War Boyes served as a Private in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry, then the Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry, and finally the Border Regiment. He was first posted to France in October 1915, and died there on 30 July 1918. He was 21 years old.
