Vernon Stanley Baker was born on 2 July 1900, the son of William Henry Baker, an inspector of telegraphs, and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated at Calston's School, Stapleton, Bristol.

 

In August 1916 Baker went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Bristol branch. Two years later, when he turned 18, he joined the army, serving as a Private in the London Regiment. He died of pneumonia in hospital in England on 7 October 1918.
