Walter Thomas Burgess was born on 21 July 1895. In October 1912, when he was 17 years old, Burgess went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

During the First World War Burgess left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Brixton Hill branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed on 26 September 1915, the second day of the Battle of Loos. He was 20 years old.
