Wilfrid Charlie Bruton was born on 28 April 1889, the son of James Bruton, a carpenter, and his wife Hannah Caroline. He was educated at Thornbury Grammar School.

 

Bruton worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Thornbury branch. During the first year of the First World War he left to join the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 6 May 1917. He was 28 years old.

 

Wilfrid Bruton is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
