William Arthur Benson was born on 21 August 1884, the son of Michael and Amelia Benson. In April 1900, when he was 15 years old, he started working for Manchester & County Bank at its Manchester Corn Exchange branch

 

In July 1916 Benson left his job at the bank's Sale branch to go on military service. Second Lieutenant William Arthur Benson of the Lancashire Fusiliers was killed in action in France on 21 March 1918. He was 33 years old and left a widow, Irene.
