William Lindsay Browne was born in 1887, the son of John Browne, a naval officer, and his wife Edith Bellwood Browne. John Browne died in William's early childhood.

 

Browne was educated at the Royal Naval School, Kent, and in August 1905 went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

In 1914 Browne left his job at the bank's Surbiton branch to join the army. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry) in December 1914, and was appointed Machine Gun Officer. He was wounded on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, and died of his injuries several days later, on 5 July 1916. He was 28 years old.
