Albert Edward Clarke was born in Winchester on 26 July 1893, the son of Arthur Decimus Clarke and his wife Fanny Louisa.

 

On his 17th birthday in July 1910 Clarke went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

During the First World War Clarke left his post as a clerk at the bank's Hastings branch to join the army. By the time of his death he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the York & Lancaster Regiment.

 

Clarke was killed in action in Belgium on 20 April 1916. He was 22 years old.
