Alexander Cowley was born on 14 April 1891, the son of William and Alice Cowley. In October 1908, when he was 17 years old, Cowley went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its North Shields branch. After completing his three-year apprenticeship he stayed there as a clerk. In July 1914 he was transferred to Wolverhampton branch.

 

During the First World War Cowley joined the army. By 1917 he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 1 July 1917. He was 26 years old.
