Aylett Cameron Cushen was born on 11 March 1895, the son of a draper.

 

In June 1911, when Cushen was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its London High Holborn branch. In July 1914, shortly after the completion of his three-year apprenticeship, he moved to London Islington branch as a clerk.

 

During the First World War Cushen joined the army, and by the time of his death in 1916 was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He died in France on 30 June 1916. He was 21 years old.
