Cecil Joseph Crofts was born on 22 March 1888, the son of Joseph Crofts and his wife Elizabeth. In January 1907, when he was 18 years old, Crofts went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Crofts became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In January 1916 Crofts left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Limehouse branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Machine Gun Corps. He died of influenza on 5 November 1918. He was 30 years old.
