Edward Stanley Cooper was born on 26 September 1896, the son of Harold Cooper and his wife Catherine Jane. In April 1914, when he was 17 years old, Cooper went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In January 1916 Cooper left his job as a clerk at the bank's head office to join the army. He originally joined The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), but some months later transferred to the London Regiment. Private Cooper was killed in action in France on 5 October 1916. He was 20 years old.
