Edward Moseley Cope was born in Cheshire on 18 December 1895, the son of George Cope, a farmer, and his wife Jane. In July 1913 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Sandbach branch. He transferred to Crewe branch in 1915 and was promoted to a clerkship there in 1917.

 

Cope joined the army in January 1916, initially in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). A year later he was commissioned into the North Staffordshire Regiment, and by June 1919 was a Lieutenant, attached to the Leicestershire Regiment. He was accidentally killed in Germany on 13 June 1919, several months after the signing of the Armistice. He was 23 years old.
