Ernest Cartwright

Ernest Mills Cartwright was born on 8 January 1890, the son of Charles Knight Cartwright, a commercial clerk, and his wife Jane. In July 1907, when he was 17 years old, Cartwright went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Cartwright became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In April 1916 Cartwright left his post as a clerk in the bank's London West End office to join the army. By the time of his death in April 1918 he was serving as a Lieutenant in the Tank Corps.

 

Lieutenant Cartwright was killed in action in France on 14 April 1918. He was 28 years old, and left a widow, Kathleen, whom he had married in June 1914.

 

Ernest Cartwright is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London St James & Piccadilly branch.
