George Storrie Campbell was born in Edinburgh in 1897, the son of Thomas Campbell, a butcher, and his wife Jessie. In May 1914, when he was 17, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Haymarket branch.

 

During the First World War Campbell joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in France on 9 April 1917, shortly after his 20th birthday.
