Gerald Patrick Cronin was born on 2 April 1894, the son of a customs and excise officer. He was educated at St Edmund's RC School and Central Secondary School, both in Sheffield.

 

In October 1912, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Bolton branch. In May 1914 he moved to Sheffield branch.

 

During the First World War Cronin joined the army, serving in the London Regiment. Lance Corporal Gerald Patrick Cronin died in Belgium on 7 June 1917. He was 23 years old.
