Hender Clarke was born in Teddington on 26 May 1896, the son of Charles Hender Clarke, a wine merchant, and his wife Mary Ann Sarah Clarke. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office.

 

In the first months of the First World War Clarke joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the London Regiment. He died of war wounds on 16 October 1919, nearly a year after the signing of the Armistice. He was 23 years old.

 

Hender Clarke is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
