John Alfred Chandler was born in Islington in 1893, the son of Joseph George Chandler, a print compositor, and his wife Margaret. He worked for Holt & Co.

 

During the First World War Chandler left the bank to go on active service in the navy. On 11 February 1916 the mine sweeping sloop in which he was serving, HMS Arabis, was sunk by German destroyers in the North Sea during the Battle of Dogger Bank. Assistant Paymaster John Alfred Chandler, along with more than 50 of his crewmates, was killed. He was 23 years old.
