John Mactaggart Clark was born on 5 April 1886. In July 1902, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Southampton branch. In May 1909 he moved to Cardiff Bute Docks branch as a clerk. By December 1914, his manager there was recommending him for promotion to a junior accountant's post.

 

During the First World War Clark joined the army, rising to the rank of Captain in The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), attached to the Durham Light Infantry. He died of septic pneumonia on 18 November 1918, a week after the signing of the Armistice. He was 32 years old.
