John Croasdell

John Maddocks Croasdell was born in Leytonstone, Essex in 1887, the son of John Percival Croasdell, a bank worker, and his wife Kate. In December 1904 he followed his father into banking, starting work at Robarts, Lubbock & Co in London. In 1914 that bank merged with Coutts & Co and Croasdell became an employee of the larger merged bank.

 

During the First World War Croasdell joined the army, initially as a Trooper in the West Kent Yeomanry, which later became part of The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He served in France from December 1916 and fought at both Arras and Ypres, also qualifying as a gas instructor. Lance Corporal John Maddocks Croasdell was wounded in August 1917 and died of his injuries two days later, on 31 August 1917. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Helen, whom he had married in 1914.
