Montagu Cyril Castledine was born on 16 February 1889, the son of George Henry Castledine, a lithographer, and his wife Emma Eleanor. In July 1907, when he was 18 years old, Castledine went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Castledine became an employee of London County & Westminster Bank.

 

Early in the First World War Castledine left his post as a clerk at the bank's Sudbury branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 16 June 1915. He was 26 years old.
