Stormont Hays Card was born on 19 January 1886, the son of Arthur W Card, a clerk in the head office of National Provincial Bank of England. In 1904, when he was 18 years old, Card also went to work for the bank, as an apprentice at its Whitchurch branch.

 

In July 1907, after completing his three-year apprenticeship, Card was transferred to Dover branch as a clerk. He moved to Ipswich branch in April 1909; Exeter in July 1911; Oxford in August 1912; and Southampton in July 1913.

 

In February 1915 Card left the bank to go on military service. Second Lieutenant Card of the Somerset Light Infantry was killed in action in France on 10 April 1917. He was 31 years old.
