Thomas Cordwell was born on 14 August 1894, the son of Henry Rawson Cordwell and his wife Amelia. In August 1911, just before his 17th birthday, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its head office in Manchester. He was promoted to a clerkship there in 1914.

 

Cordwell joined the army in October 1915, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He died on the Somme on 13 November 1916. He was 22 years old.
