Wilfred Norman Cross was born on 20 July 1899, the son of Frederick Cross and his wife Blanche. He was educated at Alleyn's School, Dulwich, where his father was an assistant schoolmaster. On leaving school in 1915 he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In July 1917, five days after his 18th birthday, Cross left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to join the Royal Naval Air Service. By 1918 he was a Flight Sub-Lieutenant. Cross died on 6 March 1918 while flying at Manston, Kent. He was 18 years old.

 

Wilfred Cross is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
