William Albert Chapman was born in 1891, the son of Thomas and Lydia Chapman. He was educated at Driffield Grammar School, Yorkshire. In about 1907 he went to work for Yorkshire Penny Bank, and in November 1914 moved to Beckett & Co of Leeds.

 

In November 1915 Chapman joined the army. He served as a Lance Corporal in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and died in Flanders on 17 September 1916. He was 25 years old.
