William Horace Gordon Compton was born on 3 September 1892, the son of William Henry Compton, a surgeon, and his wife Gertrude.

 

In October 1909, when Compton was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Ringwood branch. In December 1912, shortly after completing his three-year apprenticeship, he transferred to Dover branch as a clerk.

 

During the First World War Compton joined the army, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. He died in France on 17 June 1917. He was 24 years old.
