William Croghan was born in Birkenhead in 1890, the son of Luke Joseph Croghan, a police sergeant, and his wife Mary Croghan. By 1911 he was working as a clerk for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

 

During the First World War Croghan left his job at the bank's head office in Manchester to join the army, serving as a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 1 October 1916. He was 25 years old.
