Alick Thomas Duncan was born on 1 October 1897, the son of Thomas Duncan, a company secretary, and his wife Emily. In June 1915, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

During the First World War Duncan left his job as a clerk at the bank's Sutton branch to join the army, becoming a Second Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium on 2 March 1917. He was 19 years old.
