Charles Cowley Dennis was born in Hackney, London, on 17 January 1895, the son of Harriett Ann Dennis. He was educated at Christ's Hospital. In January 1912, the day after his 17th birthday, Dennis went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In June 1915 Dennis left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Covent Garden branch to join the army, serving in the London Regiment. He was wounded in action and, after recuperating in England, transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Second Lieutenant Charles Cowley Dennis was killed in action on 25 September 1917 when his plane was brought down in France. His body was later recovered by the French army. He was 22 years old.

 

Charles Dennis is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Covent Garden branch.
