David Richard Davies was born on 17 January 1891, the son of John Davies, a Calvinist Methodist minister, and his wife Margaret. In September 1908, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Carmarthen branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and became a clerk there.
In November 1913 he moved to Barmouth branch, but the following month he moved again, to Llandovery branch. In August 1914 he moved to Denbigh branch, and in December 1914 to the bank's London office.
Davies later joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the London Regiment. He died in France on 28 March 1918. He was 27 years old.
