Gilbert Arthur Dockree was born on 25 February 1895, the son of Edwin Dockree, a bank worker, and his wife Dorothy Martha. In 1912, a day after his 17th birthday, Dockree went to work for his father's bank, London County & Westminster Bank, spending time at the bank's branches in Brixton and Newington.

 

Before the war Dockree was an officer in the City of London Imperial Cadets, and in December 1915 the bank gave him permission to leave his job to go on military service. Second Lieutenant Gilbert Arthur Dockree of the London Regiment was killed in action in France on 15 September 1916. He was 21 years old.
