Harold John De Cann was born in Billingborough, Lincolnshire in 1897, the younger son of Richard Walker De Cann, a police sergeant, and his wife Servilla Mary. In about 1913 he went to work for Union of London & Smiths Bank as an apprentice at its Lincoln Smiths Bank branch.

 

Early in the First World War De Cann joined the army, and in December 1915 he was commissioned into the Lincolnshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Harold John De Cann was killed in action in France on 29 July 1916. He was 19 years old.

 

Harold De Cann is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
