Henry Downing

Henry Francis Mary Downing was born on 15 May 1876, the son of Eugene Downing. In July 1895 he went to work for The National Bank as a probationer at its Tralee branch. He was admitted to the permanent staff in November 1898, and transferred to Fermoy branch in June 1902. He moved to Longford branch in November 1913, but returned to Fermoy in August 1914. His staff record described him as a 'very gentlemanly young officer...habits and associates excellent. Well spoken of by the public and his manager'.

 

In November 1914 Downing left the bank to go on military service, and by 1916 was a Captain in the Leinster Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 3 September 1916. He was 40 years old.
