John Barrow Dunmill was born on 17 May 1885, the son of Alfred Thomas Dunmill and his wife Mary Elizabeth. In July 1902 Dunmill went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Dunmill became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In June 1917 Dunmill left his job as a clerk at the bank's Winchester branch to go on military service. Gunner John Barrow Dunmill of the Royal Garrison Artillery died in France on 2 February 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Maggie, whom he had married in 1912.
